What is Up-Screening?
Up-screening tests a device to a wider temperature range and tighter tolerances than the original manufacturer of the device specified.
Why Up-Screen?
The top reason for Up-Screen Testing a device is when a specification of a part (e.g. space, military, industrial) is needed to maintain or repair another legacy device but is no longer available. An example of Up-Screening: subjecting commercial parts typically rated between 0°C to +70°C to harsher specifications for industrial applications (around -40°C to +85°C) or specifications of military or space applications around (-55°C to +125°C). To verify they will operate in those conditions.
Up-Screening helps ensure devices with looser specifications can operate at these extended temperature ranges. It is crucial to perform full AC/DC/Functional testing to Up- Screen them for these challenging environments.
